Hemichannels

Connexins typically form gap junctions between two adjacent cells but in ciliary epithelium we detect Cx-50 on the surface that contacts aqueous humor.  We have evidence that the Cx-50 forms hemichannels that open occasionally to form a pathway between the cell's interior and the extracellular fluid. In this image of the porcine eye's ciliary process nuclei are shown in blue and Cx-50 on the surface of the ciliary epithelium is shown in red.
